Exploring your new neighbourhood or considering making the move? From places to eat, see or shop, Hintonburg has something for everyone.
Wait, where is Hintonburg exactly?
Hintonburg can be marked as a section of Wellington St & Somerset St. It’s cozied between Westboro and Little Italy & Chinatown. It’s pretty central to the city, and you’re most likely to entir and exit the 417 Highway from Parkdale Avenue or cruise down Carling Avenue or Scott St to get out of the area.
Here are some of my favourite spots you need to visit in Hintonburg!
Places to eat:
1. The Third
With one of the best mottos in Ottawa, “unlike the first place (home) and the second place (work), the third place allows people to put aside their concerns and simply enjoy the pleasure of good company.”
The hot dog and burgers are underrated and with a super affordable price tag, the Third is an awesome spot to check out (especially during patio season). Grab their brunch on the weekend or drop by for a delicious lunch date or dinner with an old friend.
Our favourite dishes include:
- Chicken sandwich
- Vegan bowl
- Snack appetizer dish (such good dips & variety!)
- Chien chaud
2. Hintonburg Public House
Not only is Hintonburg Public House the spot for bar bites and shareable plates, they have great happy hour options and even better vibes. From Monday gameboard nights, art classes, trivia, karaoke and more events, they’re passionate about keeping the community busy and having fun.
It’s that perfect mix of eclectic decor that it feels like you’re visiting a friend in an old Nova Scotian home. If you’re going for the first time, we suggest going for their brunch!
3. Hintonburg Market
Located in the heart of Hintonburg, Hintonburg Market is a family-owned grocery store and butcher shop. Whenever we think about getting sweet fresh fruits or florals, discovering new brands, or getting a last-minute meal idea, this is the only place that comes to mind.
Not to mention, their takeaway meals made in-house remind us of homemade dinners, and if you’re trying to make the perfect charcuterie board their fresh cut deli meats and specialty cheese are worth it.
4. Suzy Q
You haven’t had donuts, until you’ve had Suzy Q! What started as a shack in our neighbourhood parking lot has grown into three shops across Ottawa and an iconic household name. Between the fluffiest vegan-friendly dough and unique flavours, you’ll want to try them all.
We love their Black Forest donut and any seasonal surprises they have! You can also grab a coffee, hot chocolate, tea, or specialty lattes at Suzy Q now!
5. Les Moulins La Fayette
Have a little taste of France in Hintonburg with Les Moulins La Fayette. If you want to start your day off right, you have to grab one of the delicious breakfast sandwiches paired with a coffee (usually included at no extra cost!). Their breakfast sandwiches was the first thing anyone recommend to our founders when they moved to the area!
Got more of a sweet tooth instead? No worries, you can try any of their decadent pastries, viennoiseries, or chocolates.
You can also find their second location of Les Moulins La Fayette in Kanata on Hazeldean Road.
6. The Senate
The Senate on Wellington is Hintonburg’s local sports bar. Whether you’re catching the hockey game inside in the Winter or baseball on the patio in the Summer, you can enjoy the game with wings and drinks.
It’s one of the most lively options if you’re looking for a night out with friends without leaving the area. It’s a newer addition to the area but brings such a fun vibe.
You might recognize the name as they’ve become an Ottawa staple with locations on Clarence and Bank St. as well.
Places to shop:
7. Maker House Co.
Looking for gifts crafted by makers? Maker House Co. is your place to go for all things Canadian made.
From supporting craft breweries to purchasing local art, they are “redeveloping our communities and creating space for artists to thrive, businesses to grow, and careers to be made.”
Not only will you be supporting Canadian talent, but you’re sure to find something incredible you never knew you needed! They of course feature a lot of Ottawa brands specifically as well. We discover something new we love with every visit.
8. Nu Grocery
A zero-waste approach to groceries and an eye-opening gem to discover new products you never knew you needed.
Opening in 2017, this spot is Ottawa’s very first zero-waste grocer and the staff is always so incredibly kind and eager to help. From safe cleaning products and reusable straws to fresh produce, pastas, and even homemade goodies, Nu Grocery will change what and how you choose to consume.
We love their fresh samosas especially! And they can warm it up for you if you’re looking for a ready-to-go snack between errands.
9. Terra20
Digging the Nu Grocery vibe?
Ottawa-born Terra20 right next door is all about healthy living made easy. Terra20 uses an extensive vetting process for all products carried in store and online, “committed to sourcing brands that are innovative, bold, and fearless in their mission to change the way we treat ourselves and our planet.”
This is a great option for a sustainable gift or if you’re looking to make a sustainable shift yourself! Their staff are super knowledgeable and their products range from skincare & beauty to cleaning supplies and kitchen goodies.
10. Oresta organic skin care
Oresta was serving us natural beauty products before it was cool. As Ottawa’s first organic spa and beauty boutique, the Hintonburg location is a sister to the original Glebe shop and features nothing but the best organic products for your body and face.
Need a good facial? They’ve got that too!
11. Trove Fashion
Got an outfit in mind but not quite the budget for it? Stop by Trove Fashion!
This consignment-based fashion boutique carries both women’s and men’s goodies that will have you feeling brand new without breaking the bank.
12. Tinseltown
Having a bad day? Try adding a little Christmas to it! On the edge of Hintonburg, Tinseltown Christmas Emporium is your year-round holiday shop. With decorations for every possible theme or person in your life, it’s a great stop for any weekend explorer.
13. Marie Antoinette & co.
Connected to Tinseltown, this Marie Antoinette & co. store features French Country and Old World inspired decor. From Paris-inspired napkins to stunning bird cage decor, that trinket-lover in your life will be in seventh heaven!
Even if you don’t have the budget to spend right now, Marie Antoinette & co. is a magical experience to wander through and take a peek!
Places to see:
14. Parkdale Market
As the second oldest market in Ottawa, there’s no shortage of character at the Parkdale Market.
The Parkdale Public Market offers a mix of the best Canadian, provincial, and regional products around from May through November. As the seasons change, so do the market’s offerings. Over the holidays, the market becomes a hub for Christmas Trees and holiday decorations!
This outdoor market is our favourite place to grab some apple cider in the fall and fresh berries & bouquets (even large plants too!) in the summer. There are a few great coffee shops (like Morning Owl & Driphouse) right nearby, so it’s a great place to grab a drink and take a stroll. There are a few parking spots available at the market or the streets around typically have limited hour, but free parking! You’ll always find a spot.
15. Tooth and Nail
In the heart of Hintonburg, the Tooth and Nail brewery sits at the back of a century-old building that was originally built to house a heavy machinery garage, then became a printing press before being transformed into a brewing facility. With flavours that balance innovation and tradition (much like it’s location), it’s a great place to enjoy a high quality and tasty beer with your pals.
